THE TRIAL of a Co Kerry man charged in connection with the deaths of a fireman and garda, who were fatally injured while attending the scene of a road crash in 2007, is expected to begin today.

Niall Shannon (21), Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co Kerry, has pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of Garda Brian Kelleher and fireman Michael Liston at Barrigone, Foynes, Co Limerick, on February 25th, 2007.

A jury was sworn in for the trial of the 21-year-old yesterday morning.

However, the trial which was due to open after lunch failed to get under way after one of the 12 jurors asked to be excused due to illness. The woman said she suffered from migraines which could last for up to 60 hours and Judge Carroll Moran agreed to adjourn the opening of the trial until this morning after a replacement juror is selected from the jury panel.
