The President, Mrs Robinson, has sent a message of congratulation to the Olympic gold medalist. In the message, the President said. "We were still celebrating your first Olympic gold medal when you proved you had the taste for more. In winning a second gold medal and again establishing a new national record you have added a fresh chapter to Irish sporting history."

The Tanaiste, Mr Spring, said. "The sight of the Tricolour being raised twice in triumph during the opening days of the Atlanta Olympics will long be remembered by all those who have experienced these stirring days of sporting excellence."

The leader of Fianna Fail, Mr Bertie Ahern, said. "Michelle's victory is a wonderful achievement and a testament to her commitment, hard work and stamina."

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr Brendan Lynch, has also saluted Michelle Smith's second gold medal victory. "Michelle's dedication and commitment over the years have been rewarded by her two great victories," he said.

South Dublin County Council has sent best wishes to Ms Smith and has pledged to organise a welcome home party in conjunction with the community in Rathcoole. "We are planning a welcome home party which you will never forget, to match the two nights of excitement from which we will never forget."

The leader of the Progressive Democrats, Ms Mary Harney, has praised Ms Smith's "truly remarkable achievement" in winning a second Olympic bold.
