A vote by members of the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) branch in Limerick calling for a public sworn inquiry into the circumstances surrounding an investigation by Limerick Institute of Technology into a suspicious exam paper has been described as "extreme" by the college registrar.

Mr Vincent McCarthy said the case had been dealt with in accordance with a long-established procedure and management had approached the TUI and relevant staff members seeking co-operation in processing the matter.

A TUI spokesman said about 70 members had attended the TUI branch meeting and there was "little dissent" when the motion was proposed. It is expected that the Minister for Education, Mr Woods, will be requested to establish the inquiry. The case relates to a final-year construction studies student who was suspended by the examination board.
