Ankara - The Turkish government yesterday lost a first-round vote in parliament on a constitutional amendment to allow President Suleyman Demirel to stand for re-election.

The main provision in the amendment package, which allows presidents to be elected for two five-year terms, won only 253 votes. It needed 367 votes foe endorsement.
