The new carriages, costing £40 million, were imported from Japan and Spain. They have been phased into use over recent months and DART capacity has been boosted by 35 per cent.
The carriages are the first addition to the DART service since it began in 1984. They have additional individual seating, standing room and space for wheelchairs
Speaking at the launch, the Minister said the spending would continue. "A further 12 carriages will be introduced next year, ensuring that a service which has proved such a success despite lack of funding over the years, continues to grow and expand as the city does," she said.
