Detectives investigating the murder of a man and the burning of his body in Limavady, Co Derry, in the early hours of Sunday morning, yesterday arrested two local men on suspicion of murder.

The charred body was found by a member of the public in a wheelie-bin at a disused cattle market yard in Linenhall Street, close to the town centre, late on Sunday afternoon.

The body was so badly burnt that the gender of the victim was only established following a post-mortem examination at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry yesterday.

Police believe the victim was murdered elsewhere and that his body was put in the bin and taken to the disused cattle market where it was set on fire.

Eight months ago the charred remains of another murdered man were found in the same disused cattle yard, but Chief Insp George Byran, who is in charge of the latest murder investigation, ruled out a connection between the two incidents.

"I have 30 years of experience in the police and this is one of the worst incidents of its kind I have ever come across," he said.

"We are following a definite line of inquiry. It is our belief that the victim, who was 5' 6" to 5' 7" in height, had been murdered elsewhere and was then transported in a wheelie-bin to the site where the body was found on Sunday."

Chief Insp Byran appealed to anyone who had seen "a wheelie-bin being pushed through the streets of the town early on Sunday morning" to contact the police immediately. He said it had not been established if the victim was a local or a tourist. There had been a music festival in the town at the weekend.
