Madrid - The first two cases of mad cow disease have been uncovered in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia, the agriculture ministry said yesterday.

Health authorities in the Xunta autonomous region detected the contamination from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease, during testing of 132 cattle. The agriculture ministry has called a news conference for later in the day to discuss the findings.
