A child and an elderly man have died in separate fires over the weekend. Rebecca Kennedy (3) died on Saturday after her dress caught fire at the family home in Co Clare on Friday night. She was standing near an open fire in the house in the village of Connolly, on the main road between Ennis and Miltown Malbay. The girl died in Ennis Hospital. At about midnight on Friday, a fire start ed at the home of Mr John O'Connor (78), in Campile, Ballykeerouge, Co Wexford. A neighbour who spotted the fire in the two-roomed cottage called the fire brigade and the severely injured man was brought to Wexford General Hospital where he died.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian who died after being struck by a car as he crossed the road at Ballyfrawley, in Newcastle West, Co Limerick on Friday evening was named as Mr Bill Daly from Coolanoran, Newcastle West.
