Two Irish actors are in the bidding to walk off with US television's greatest prize - an Emmy Award.

Cork actor Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is hot in the running for the Lead Actor Award for his vivid portrayal of Elvis Presley in the made-for-tv film, Elvis.

Belfast-man Kenneth Branagh has also made the prestigious nominations list for this year's US Primetime Emmy Awards for his role in Warm Springsas former US president Franklin D Roosevelt.

Rhys Meyers (27), who is currently filming Mission Impossible IIIwith a host of Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise, strolled down the red carpet at Cannes recently after starring in Woody Allen's movie, Match Point, as a tennis professional.

Branagh, a successful West End actor, is no stranger to the television screen, with lead roles in tv movies, films and stage.

The 44-year-old, who directed the 2000 musical version of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, has starred in a host of films including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Rabbit Proof Fenceand the TV movie Shackleton.

Three of the stars of US hit sitcom, Desperate Housewives, will go head to head in the category for best lead actress in a comedy, Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman.

British actors Hugh Laurie and Ian McShane were also among those tipped for top honours in the American awards, both nominated in the best lead actor in a drama series category.

Ricky Gervais's The Office Specialis nominated in the made-for-television movie category.

But the real front-runners were two made-for-television films, The Life And Death Of Peter Sellersand Warm Springs, each winning 16 Emmy nominations.

Everybody Loves Raymond, which has ended after nine seasons, received 13 nominations including best comedy. Joining the competition for best comedy was last year's winner, Arrested Development, and Scrubs.

Best drama series contenders were Lost, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, 24and veteran White House drama The West Wing.
