Two people have been killed and another seriously injured in road crashes in Kildare and Laois this afternoon, while a girl has died following a crash yesterday.

A woman, in her 30s, died after her car collided with a lorry near Kilcock, Co Kildare, shortly before 2pm. The driver of the lorry was unhurt.

Elsewhere, a man was killed when the car he was driving left the road at The Heath near Portlaoise.

A female passenger in the car was seriously injured in the crash, which occurred at around 2.30 pm.

Earlier the R407 was shut in both directions between Baltracey Cross and Painstown Cross, while the M7 was closed southbound from J15 Mountmellick to J17 Portlaoise. Both roads have reopened, according to AA Roadwatch.

The latest fatalities take the number of those killed so far this year to 64.

An 11-year-old girl has died in hospital after being knocked down on a road yesterday in the North.

Rachael McConville, from the Rathfriland area, sustained fatal injuries when she was struck by a Volkswagen people carrier at about 4.30pm on the town’s Castlewellan Road yesterday afternoon.

She was taken to hospital but died earlier today.
