Two men convicted of cattle rustling were remanded for a probation report by a judge yesterday, after Carrickmacross District Court was told that five animals worth £1,150 were snatched from a farm and later found in a field near Dundalk.

The court was told that Andrew Byrne and Thomas Murray, both with addresses in Louth, drove the cattle through a fence at night and brought them across fields.

A garda said the stolen animals were found on the outskirts of Dundalk, in a field belonging to a relative of one of the men.

Convicting the two men, Judge Flann Brennan remanded them on bail to June 24th for a probation report.
