A teenage girl, who injured a garda when she violently resisted arrest, has been given a two-month sentence by Judge Gerard Haughton at the Dublin Children's Court.

The 17-year-old girl had kicked Garda Catriona Houlihan twice on her knee, which left her with a damaged cartilage, bruising and swelling. Garda Houlihan, attached to Fitzgibbon Street station, Dublin, said the girl had become extremely aggressive when she was stopped for a drug search.

She had kicked Garda Houlihan's knee and knocked her to the ground. The girl then attempted to headbutt two other gardaí before she again kicked Garda Houlihan on the knee. The garda said she was off work for two weeks and was unable to drive for months afterwards. She is still undergoing physiotherapy and may have to have an operation to repair the damaged cartilage.

The girl pleaded guilty to the assault on October 14th last and admitted possession of a small amount of cannabis for her personal use. Judge Haughton said the girl had not shown any remorse and had not offered an apology, which could have influenced him to impose a suspended sentence.
