Two men appeared before Newry Magistrates Court today charged with a number of offences related to a cross-border chase by gardaí on Monday night.

Daniel Barry McGonnell (19) from Clontibret, Co Monaghan and John Christopher Crowe (40) of Ardee, Co Louth were remanded in custody to appear in court again in Armagh on 26 August.

Mr McGonnell faced a total of five charges including assault of a police officer, hi-jacking a
taxi and holding its driver against his will and resisting a police officer.

Mr Crowe was charged with six offences relating to the same incident.

A 38-year-old woman who was arrested in Castleblayney on Monday night in connection with the same incident was freed by gardaí today. A file is to be prepared for the DPP.
