A two-year-old girl was shot and injured in a gun attack in Northern Ireland today, police said.

A two-year-old girl was shot and injured in a gun attack in Northern Ireland today, police said.

The child was asleep when a gunman went into the house at St John's Court in the nationalist Garvaghy Road area of Portadown, Co Armagh.

A police spokesman said: "A number of shots were fired into the ceiling and the baby was struck at least once".

The child suffered wounds to her groin area, he added. Her father, another man and two other children escaped injury.
