A gallery housing hundreds of valuable works of art in University College Cork has suffered extensive damage due to the flooding in the city.

The basement of UCC’s Lewis Glucksman Gallery, which houses the art stores and the kitchens, had to be pumped clear of water over the weekend by  conservation experts and gallery staff.

The art store housed a total of 184 pieces, most of which were from University College Cork’s art collection. Eleven of the works were directly on loan from artists.

The art in storage at the time of the flooding included works by significant artists such as Hughie O’Donoghue, Louis le Brocquy and Martin Gale.

The main exhibition spaces were not affected but the gallery will remain closed until further notice.
