The National Co-operative Council has called on the UN to declare an International Nuclear Safety Day to coincide with the 13th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster yesterday.
In a letter to the UN secretary-general, Mr Kofi Annan, the council's director, Mr John O'Halloran, said: "The deadly effects of excessive radiation on innocent people thousands of miles from a nuclear accident are constantly in our thoughts".
