Details of some of the available tax reliefs that are often going unclaimed

• Tenants can claim €350 in rent relief.

• Commuters can claim back the top rate of tax, plus PRSI on the yearly cost of train and bus tickets.

• Incapacitated child tax benefit, worth up to €3,520 for a couple and €1,760 for a single carer.

• Flat-rate expenses, worth, for example, €93 a year to barman, are all infrequently claimed.

•  Workers required to be presentable on duty are entitled to up to €100 to cover clothing costs.

• Just 55 per cent of taxpayers are claiming tax reliefs on bin charges.

• Just 50 per cent claim reliefs on medical bills.
