THE Public Service Executive Union has said its members in the Department of Education have agreed to ease their industrial action over staff shortages in the Department's Athlone office so as to unblock taskwork assessments for the Applied Leaving Certificate exam.

More than 3,000 Applied Leaving Cert students have had their taskwork assessments blocked since late January because of "the dispute. PSEU assistant general secretary, Mr Billy Hannigan, said yesterday its members had agreed to "free up" the assessments in response to concerns expressed by students, teachers and parents.
