Unionists on nationalist-controlled Cookstown District Council are continuing to refuse to participate in a power-sharing arrangement with Sinn Fein and the SDLP.

The position of vice-chairman, which was left vacant at the annual meeting in June when the unionist bloc refused to nominate a candidate, was filled at Tuesday night's monthly meeting with the appointment of Ms Mary Barker, of the SDLP.

With Sinn Fein councillor Mr Sean Begley elected to the chair at the annual meeting, nationalists now occupy the two chief positions for the first time in the council's history.

There were heated exchanges at the meeting when the council approved in a nine-seven vote a Sinn Fein motion to remove all RUC and British army emblems and insignia displayed on council property.
