ALBANY - Researchers yesterday unveiled a way of changing the surface of highly sensitive red blood cells that could lead eventually to a universal blood type, allowing blood transfusions between people of different blood groups.

The research was presented at the annual meeting of Paediatric Academic Societies, which examines the latest in paediatric research. Many children with thalassemia, a potentially fatal blood disorder that requires repeated transfusions, have difficulty accepting donor blood.
