Dozens of people have attended the funeral of an unidentified new-born baby found dead in Co Down last year. The boy's body was found in a shallow grave on the shores of Strangford Lough near Newtownards last October. The child was buried at an interdenominational ceremony after a service at a funeral director's shop in the town.
Last September, the coroner's court heard the child died from severe head injuries after suffering from considerable violence. He has never been identified.
Neither of the child's parents has been identified but detectives renewing their appeal for information said they believed his mother lived within a five-mile radius and could be in her early teens.
The officer in charge of the investigation, Det Insp Ron Edgar, said it was a premeditated killingand urged anyone who knew anything to come forward. He appealed directly to the mother to tell someone she trusted, like a priest, doctor or teacher, and promised her full police understanding.
