The sun shone yesterday on Inishbofin, off north Donegal, for the first wedding on the island in 25 years.

The summer population increased 10-fold on the tiny 300-acre island for the wedding of Letterkenny hairdresser Bernie Ryan to Jonnie Patton.

Ms Ryan, whose mother, Kathleen (née Coll), is a native of Inishbofin, fulfilled her childhood dream when she exchanged vows on the picturesque island, which is located just a few kilometres from the mainland at Magheroarty.

Guests boarded the island ferry at Machaire Rabhartaigh pier at 10am.The bride, who had travelled to Inishbofin the previous day, was resplendent in her wedding dress as she walked from the old family homestead to Teach Pobail Mhuire na nGrás, where 80 guests had assembled.

The couple were met by Gaoth Dobhair-based curate Fr Brian O'Fearraigh, whose father is from the island. Transport on the island is by foot and tractor.

Guests enjoyed a gourmet buffet in a marquee which provided panoramic views. Every house and fridge on the island was used to store the wedding food.

The bride's brother, Danny, is a former Irish senior middleweight boxing champion and runs the island's only hostel, where most of the guests spent the night.

Ahead of the wedding Ms Ryan said: "We have a mobile home on the island which we use on a regular basis. Even now, whenever I take a walk across the island, I'm struck by its beauty. It's like the Caribbean."
