US court leaves Clinton 40 days to avoid disbarrment

Former US president Mr Bill Clinton has been suspended from practicing law before the Supreme Court

Former US president Mr Bill Clinton has been suspended from practicing law before the Supreme Court. The former president now has 40 days to argue against his complete disbarrment.

Returning from its summer recess, the US's highest court suspended Mr Clinton after he admitted giving false, evasive statements about his relationship with then White House intern Ms Monica Lewinsky.

Earlier this year, his licence to practice law in Arkansas was suspended for five years, which in turn trigged the Supreme Court's action.

The one-sentence order entitled, "In the matter of discipline of Bill Clinton" is a largely symbolic blow for the former president as he has not practiced before the Supreme Court and was not expected to argue any cases in the future.
