The United States has warned its citizens in the Nordic and Baltic states to be extra vigilant after receiving "threat information" on the eve of its presidential election.
"US citizens in the Nordic and Baltic countries (should) be vigilant as to their surroundings, especially in centres of ground-based mass transit," the State Department said at the weekend on the US embassy website in Helsinki.
The statement did not give further details or say if the warning was linked to tomorrow's election but urged US citizens to report unusual or suspicious persons, incidents or circumstances to the police.
In Latvia, the US embassy warned citizens to avoid large shopping areas and transport hubs "on or about November 1st", according to a statement on its website.
Police said on Saturday they had tightened security at some key embassies on worries about possible attacks.
The Finnish Security Police (SUPO) said the threat was timed to coincide with the US election, and a videotape from al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden last week that raised the possibility of new September 11th-style attacks.
Norway raised its alert level to "moderate" from "low" on October 2nd after the country was mentioned along with others in a tape purportedly from al-Qaeda. Norway was the only Nordic nation mentioned in the tape. Such warnings are rare in the Nordic region.
