Waterford is to get an 800-job boost through development announcements today by two American-linked companies.

The United States-based biotechnology firm Genzyme is set to create nearly 500 of the jobs by taking over the former Ray Ban sunglasses plant that closed last year.

The Tánaiste Ms Harney is expected to announce the move later today. The company is said to have been in talks for some time with the IDA.

The second jobs announcement is expected from the Nypro company which is jointly owned by Irish and US interests and produces plastic-moulded components for the telecommunications, healthcare and car industries.
