Tennis:The US Open men's singles final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will take place today after persistent rain in New York last night left officials with no choice but to put the match back 24 hours until 9pm (Irish time) this evening.
A statement from tournament officials read: "Due to the continued uncertainty of the weather forecast and to be fair to the players and not inconvenience our on-site fans any longer, we regrettably have to move the US Open men's singles final and conclusion of the women's doubles final to Monday."
That's good news for Djokovic's chances of success - he had by far the harder semi-final on Saturday, needing nearly four hours to see off Roger Federer in five thrilling sets. Nadal, meanwhile, breezed past Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets.
"Maybe it goes in my favour, it being cancelled today," Djokovic admitted to US television. "I'm sure I'll be fit for tomorrow (Monday) and play my best tennis."
It will be the third successive year the tournament has run into a third week.
Federer beat Andy Murray on the third Monday in 2008, while last year Juan Martin Del Potro saw off Federer on the 15th day.
When play does get under way, Nadal will be looking to become only the seventh man in history to complete the career Grand Slam and the first since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in succession.
The world number one could also become the first man since 1960 to win the US Open without dropping a set.
However, although Djokovic trails Nadal 14-7 overall in their career head-to-head, the Serbian has won their last three meetings and has a winning record (7-3) on hardcourts against the left-hander.
The women's doubles final had got under way prior to the rain arriving.
Liezel Huber and Nadia Petrova were just three points from victory at the time, leading 6-2 4-6 5-4 against Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova, who were 0-15 down on their serve when play was halted.
That match will resume on the Arthur Ashe Stadium at 8pm (Irish time) tonight.
