A US police officer who shot dead an Irishman in Oregan has been refused bail as sex abuse charges against him are investigated.

Thirty-five-year-old Tony Gonzalez appeared in an Oregon court last night for arraignment on the abuse charges.

Salem police say he had been abusing a girl for years but had stopped. The girl and her mother told police the abuse resumed after Mr Gonzalez shot and killed Andrew “AJ” Hanlon (20) in June.

Investigators have said little except that Mr Gonzalez was responding to a burglary call but Mr Hanlon’s family say he was shot seven times in various parts of his body and that he was not armed. The case is expected to go to a grand jury soon.
