The United States, widening its offensive against terrorism, has released a new list of 200 individuals it suspects of having links to the September 11 attacks, Britain's financial regulator said today.

Britain has received the list, compiled by the FBI, and is sharing it with banks but has decided against formally issuing it due to sensitivities with the content, said Patrick Humphries, a spokesman for the Financial Services Authority.

"There is a new list and we have received it," Mr Humphries said. "But it is not something that will be made public. We will give the list to the banks to see if any names match but there are some sensitivities attached to it."

British government sources said Washington is asking national regulators to supply bank account details for individuals named in the list. But they said the list ran to more than 400 names with aliases and contained no details.

The latest document is separate from a list naming 39 individuals and organisations which the Bush administration issued earlier in October, demanding their assets to be frozen.
