Van used in Dublin robbery found near Dundalk

Gardaí have recovered the white lorry used in yesterday's robbery of around €2

Gardaí have recovered the white lorry used in yesterday's robbery of around €2.5 million from a Brinks Allied van in Dublin.

It was found in a public place at Dromad, north of Dundalk, after it was spotted by a member of the public. The van was empty but had not been burnt out.

It has been brought to Dublin for a technical examination.

Superintendent Noel McLoughlin of Coolock Garda Station told a press conference this afternoon gardaí were keeping an open mind on whether or not there was criminal or paramilitary involvement in the robbery.

He said both the gunmen who held up the driver with a handgun, and his accomplice who followed the van to the Killester sportsground, had been masked.

He said that one of the men was thin, aged between 18 and 22 years and wore a shiny, black-type bomber jacket. The other man, aged between 24 and 28 was of a stockier build and wore a navy bomber jacket. Both had strong Dublin accents.

Supt McLoughlin appealed for members of the public to come forward if they had seen the white van or any suspicious activity around that time. "Somebody out there must have seen something," he said.

Yesterday's raid was the second substantial security van robbery in north Dublin in just over two weeks.

Minister for Justice Michael McDowell and Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy met private security representatives this afternoon.

Following the meeting Mr Conroy said it was too early to draw a link between the two raids.
