A strike by vets in Irish meat plants from next Monday could mean Irish beef, pork and lamb will be in short supply over Christmas.

Last Friday, Veterinary Ireland served seven days’ notice on the Department of Agriculture after its members voted in favour of industrial action, up to and including strike action.

Proposals to replace vets with non-veterinary technical agricultural officers and other food business operator staff has caused the dispute.
