A man who ended up on a life support machine after two men kicked and stamped on his head in an unprovoked assault in Cork last January has died.

Christian Scully, (28), from Togher died at Cork University Hospital in the early hours of this morning surrounded by his family and close friends.

Two men appeared in court in Cork last month charged in connection with the attack. Both men are to be tried in Cork Circuit Court in relation to the assault.

The Bishop of Cork and Ross Dr John Buckley extended his sympathy to the Scully family today on behalf of the people of the city and county.
