Viper isn't exactly the most novel name for a videogame but I suppose when it features you controlling a helicopter blowing up everything in your path, then it fits.
For that is what Viper is about, full stop. But it does look fantastic and the soundtrack lends great atmosphere to proceedings.
There is a variation in the levels also not only in design but in location (cities, deserts etc) The explosions are highly detailed and you would be hard pressed to find better in any other Playstation game. But as you progress through the levels, which are heavily laden with enemies, (air and ground units, stationary gun placements and the prerequisite bosses,) you begin to notice some stuff. First, you'll begin to wonder . . . helicopter, shooting, bosses, haven't you seen similar stuff a multitude of times already? Then, you will realise that while you may be controlling the position of your craft, you have little or no control over where it's going because it has all been predetermined for you. (Why would you want to control when and where you go anyway?) And finally, you will see behind the impressive graphics and realise that this game is infuriating without offering you any real challenge. This is just mutton dressed up as lamb. Now where did I hear that before?
