Vodafone said today it would not sell any third generation (3G) mobile phones outside Japan in 2002 due to a shortage of suitable handsets, the Financial Times(FT) reported today.

The news comes just a day after the company revealed it had put back its planned launch of third generation services in Germany until the beginning of 2003 due to technical problems with the handsets.

The FT said the decision meant Vodafone would not begin actively marketing 3G services in Europe until well into next year. Vodafone had previously said it would launch 3G services in Britain, Germany and Spain in the second half of this year.
