Ha Jin was born in China and served for five years in the Peoples Liberation Army. He emigrated following the Tiananmen Square massacre and is now a professor of English at Emory University. He has published two volumes of poetry, Between Silences and Facing Shadows and two collections of short fiction, Ocean of Words, and The Bridegroom. Waiting is his first full-length novel and has already won the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
