Galway Corporation today lifted a public health warning over contamination in Galway city's water supplies, a spokesman told ireland.com.
The third of three consecutive tests on the water returned clear from the Western Health Board laboratory today, allowing the corporation to lift the precaution which was issued last Friday following detection of contaminants in the centre city water.
The cause of the contamination has not yet been confirmed, although work on updating the water pipes in the city centre has been suggested as a possible source. Another possible cause cited is the presence of illegal connections to the city’s water supply.
Mr Ray Brennan, senior executive water engineer with Galway Corporation, said the corporation has evidence that illegal connections have been made to the water supply. "It is possible that contamination could enter through those systems," he said.
He said that these would be discussed at "the highest level" within the corporation, and added it was likely that strong measures would be taken to deal with illegal connections.
