The president of ASTI has warned that there will have to be "massive investment" if physical education is to be introduced into schools as an exam subject.

Mr John Hurley said a recent survey for ASTI showed that only 56 per cent of second-level schools have PE halls. Whereas 80 per cent of such schools can offer at least two PE classes a week to first-year students, this falls to 42 per cent by sixth year. In girls-only schools, only 29 per cent offer two PE classes a week for sixth years, compared to 46 per cent for boys-only schools and 49 per cent for co-educational schools.
