Midlanders have been warned not to drink, bathe in or allow animals drink water from the lower reaches of Lough Ree following the discovery of an algal bloom on the lake in Portlick and Hodson bays, just north of Athlone.
The warning came from Westmeath County Council health officials who said they had notified all the relevant authorities in relation to the appearance of the algae.
