SERBIA: Serbian police have issued an arrest warrant for Mr Slobodan Milosevic's wife, Ms Mirjana Markovic, suspected of involvement in the murder of a political foe of her husband.

Warrants have been issued for Ms Markovic and the couple's son, Marko, who fled the country shortly after his father, the Serbian president, was toppled from power in October 2000.

On Monday the Serbian government said police were expected to issue a warrant shortly for Ms Markovic, who was reported to be visiting her son in Russia, to question her about the murder of communist-era Serbian president Mr Ivan Stambolic.

Ms Markovic, a major political force in her own right during her husband's rule, has denied any involvement in the killing.

Russia's Interior Ministry has said it has no information about her whereabouts.

Serbian police also want to question Mr Milosevic, currently on trial at the UN War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague, about the Stambolic murder.

Mr Stambolic, a one-time Milosevic ally turned foe, disappeared while out jogging shortly before Mr Milosevic was ousted. His body was discovered last week and police said bullet wounds indicated he had been shot by Mr Milosevic's feared special police.
