Social welfare recipients in Dublin who were to receive their payments by cheque today will be able to collect them from their local delivery offices this afternoon.

For those around the country, the cheques will be available from tomorrow after 11am.

Some 27,000 cheques had been due for collection by An Post from the Department of Social and Family Affairs computer centre in Dublin yesterday evening but could not be collected because of poor weather conditions.

An Post managed to collect the cheques today and have been able to deliver them to local delivery offices in Dublin. They have recommended that those who need them urgently should collect them at their local delivery office.

The cheques will not be available for collection from delivery offices outside the capital until tomorrow.

The current cold snap and poor conditions underfoot had resulted in disruptions to postal delivery services in some areas.

A spokeswoman for An Post said Dublin postal routes are particularly bad.

"Conditions on some routes vary widely from passable to treacherous," she said.

She said An Post had "moved heaven and earth" to distribute social the social welfare cheques. "They will be handed out to recipients at their local delivery offices in Dublin today when they provide ID," she said.
