Driving conditions have improved across the country this afternoon but motorists are still advised to exercise caution in some areas.
Snow, sleet and icy patches made driving conditions dangerous this morning with the east coast and some northwestern areas still affected.
A number of crashes were reported, although there have been no deaths or serious injuries.
The Irish Ferries Swift sailing at 5.30 pm has been cancelled due to bad weather. Passengers will be accomodated on Cruise sailings at and 9.05 pm.
Dublin rail services have returned to normal after following earlier delays to the Dart service.
Some roads in Wicklow remain impassable and the Sallygap is still closed to traffic.
Conditions have improved on the N81 but Lacken and Ballyknockin in Blessington are impassable. AA Roadwatch report that Rathdangan, Barnamelia and Knockanana are all still very bad.
Motorists have been advised to take care in Co Donegal as earlier frost thaws.
Met Éireann has forecast continuing cold weather for today, with a risk of heavy, wintry showers. However, these will be interspersed with sunny spells.
Another very cold night is expected tonight with a widespread sharp to severe frost and some icy patches.
Lowest temperatures are expected to reach -3° Celsius in places.
