Wilkinson calls for support for Reid

Howard Wilkinson is calling on Leeds to map out a long-term strategy - and stand by manager Peter Reid.

The man who took the club to the championship has looked on with a sense of disbelief as they have lurched into crisis.

Reid's future would appear to be on the line after the 6-1 hammering at Portsmouth on Saturday.

Leeds, facing a massive £78million debt and having already announced a record £49.5million annual loss, must decide whether is Reid's fault they are bottom of the table.

Wilkinson, however, feels that sacking Reid would achieve nothing. "It is very important that there is stability at a time like this in a football club," he told Sky Sports News.

"It is very important that the manager knows what is happening for the next three months, the next six months.

"I have heard nothing in the last week that has told me the club has a strategy, what that strategy is and whether that includes Peter.

"Leeds' problems will not be put right overnight. Certainly what happens on the pitch in the next two or three weeks, if all goes well, that is not going to solve the problems either.

"They have to have a plan to deal with this for the next two or three years.

Reid, who took in Manchester City's game with Leicester yesterday, will not give up and walk away.

"If you are going to ask me that then don't bother because I've never been a man to resign," he said after the weekend's defeat.

"Whether I'm still in charge for the next match is somebody else's decision.
