Actress Winona Ryder's trial on shoplifting and drug possession has been after she her arm was injured by a camera in a media melee as she returned to court after lunch.

The Hollywood star is charged with theft, burglary, vandalism and possession of oxycodone, a controlled drug. She denies the charges.

Ms Ryder looked shaken and appeared in court with a bandage on one of her arms. She was given time to seek medical attention and the case will now continue on Thursday.

Earlier, a security guard claimed he saw the actress walk out of a shop in Beverly Hills without paying for several items in December last year.

He said he watched her closely and at one point she picked up a black designer hat and walked around the store with it on her head.

"I was able to see she still had the black hat, it was no longer on her head but was in her bag on top of her red Saks Fifth Avenue shopping bag," he said, adding that the film star walked past a number of tills as she headed towards a shop exit.
