Tennis/Shelbourne Men's Irish Open:Davis Cup stars Conor Niland and Peter Clarke delighted home fans on Tuesday by registering superb victories over Gary Lugassy and Igor Sijsling respectively.
Niland defeated the eigth seeded Frenchman Lugassy in an
absorbing evening encounter which went the distance before the
Limerickman won out 3/6, 6/3, 6/4.
Earlier, Clarke won in straight sets, 6/3, 7/6(6) against the
Dutchman Sijsling. The sizeable home crowd were treated to dramatic
tennis in both matches in conditions that settled as the evening
progressed.
James McGee, however, was defeated by the impressive Alun
Jones, the number four seed from Australia. Castleknock player
McGee played mature tennis before going down 7/5, 6/4.
Ireland now has three players through to the last sixteen of the tournament and all are in action Wednesday.
National number one Louk Sorensen plays American Brendan
Evans at 1pm and he is followed on court by Peter Clarke who
takes on Colin Ebelthite from Australia. Conor Niland again plays
in the
evening session, taking on Slovenia's Grega Zemlja at 6.30pm.
Entry to the Shelbourne Men's Irish Open is free for the
duration of the tournament.
