Gardaí yesterday stopped traffic in Sandymount in Dublin seeking witnesses to an armed robbery the previous day.

A cash-in-transit van was making a delivery when the robbery took place.

Motorists were stopped in the street where the getaway car is believed to have moved from Sandymount Green on to the seafront at Strand Road.

Gardaí said they were hoping to find people who had travelled the same way the day before and who might have seen suspicious activity.

They set up a checkpoint in the village and interviewed passing motorists about possible sightings of the getaway car, for which they had a description.

The incident occurred at 10.50am on Thursday outside the AIB branch in Sandymount. A lone male believed to have been armed with a handgun threatened staff and took the cash box as it was being uploaded.

A five-figure sum is believed to have been taken.

No shots were fired and there were no injuries.

The man left in a green Toyota Avensis driven by another man in the direction of Strand Road.

Gardaí said anybody with information could contact Irishtown gardaí on (01) 666 9608.
