A young Donegal woman has told the tribunal she was "absolutely terrified" when she was arrested by members of the Carty internal inquiry into Garda activities in Donegal.
The tribunal was established after two opposition TDs brought information to the attention of the Minister for Justice suggesting the inquiry, headed by assistant commissioner Kevin Carty, might be compromised.
Ms Eleanor McDermott (28) told the tribunal she was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, and taken from her Letterkenny home to Manorhamilton Garda station in Leitrim on November 15th, 1999.
She said she "thought it would be like the movies", and when she told the guards she didn't want to say anything, they would go. However, she said Det Sgt Michael Keane became aggressive, raising his voice and banging the table.
He shouted: "I'm in charge of this investigation." Ms McDermott was asked by her counsel, Mr Desmond Dockery, what she wanted the chairman to understand about her time in Manorhamilton Garda station.
"I was absolutely terrified. I agreed to things I would never have agreed to if they hadn't been so horrible," she said. "I have suffered from depression over it."
In the current module, the tribunal is examining allegations by Ms Adrienne McGlinchey that, together with Det Noel McMahon and Supt Kevin Lennon, she mixed explosives that were later used in bogus Garda finds of terrorist arms.
Both men have denied those claims, and Ms McGlinchey denies she was an informer.
Ms McDermott said there were inaccuracies in statements taken from her by members of the Carty internal inquiry into Garda activities in Donegal. She said she had not been shown photographs of guns to compare with one which a stranger showed to her, as recorded in a statement taken by Carty investigator Insp Hugh Coll. The tribunal continues.
