A 30-YEAR-OLD woman has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a man over the bank holiday weekend.
Maura Thornton, a native of Spiddal, and with a more recent address at Upper Salthill, Galway, was brought before a special sitting of Galway District Court yesterday morning. Ms Thornton was charged on Monday night at Galway Garda station with the murder of Mayo native Kevin Joyce (59), at an apartment at Upper Salthill on Sunday night.
Garda Greg Flemming told the court Ms Thornton had replied: “May he rest in peace” when the charge was put to her.
Judge Gerard Furlong granted the accused free legal aid. He remanded Ms Thornton in custody to appear before court number two at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on August 9th. On the application of defence solicitor Adrian MacLynn, the judge requested that the accused receive medical and psychiatric assessment at Mountjoy women’s prison.
A postmortem carried out on Mr Joyce’s body by Deputy State Pathologist Khailid Jaber revealed he had been stabbed several times. He died at the scene.
