A woman police officer was shot dead and a second injured while responding to a robbery at a city centre shop today.

A woman police officer was shot dead and a second injured while responding to a robbery at a city centre shop today.

The women officers had been called to a robbery at a shop in Morley Street, in Bradford city centre, at around 3.25pm, West Yorkshire police said.

An eyewitness described how attempts had been made at the scene to resuscitate the officer.

A force spokeswoman said: "A number of roads in the Bradford city centre area have been closed and we are asking people to avoid the area where possible."

Tom McGhie, chairman of West Yorkshire Police Federation, confirmed two officers had been shot.

He said: "Two officers have been shot while responding to an armed robbery that was on-going in Bradford this afternoon."
