A woman police officer was being questioned today over the shooting of a male colleague at a station in Northern Ireland.

The man is in a serious condition in hospital after being hit twice.

No-one else was injured.

The shooting happened at Newtownabbey Police Station, just outside north Belfast, shortly after 7pm last night.

An off-duty female police officer was arrested at the scene, a police spokeswoman said.

Detectives are understood to be treating it as a domestic incident.

Staff from the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan's Office have been alerted.

The spokeswoman added that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the shooting were ongoing.
