A 22-year-old unemployed woman was charged today with the murder of a Somali man whose dismembered body was found in the Royal Canal in Dublin.

Charlotte Mulhall, from Kilclare Gardens in Tallaght, appeared at Bridewell District Court charged with killing 39-year-old Farah Swaleh Noor.

His mutilated corpse was found semi-submerged in the canal in the shadow of Croke Park in March last year. It took almost four months for forensic detectives to identify him.

Detective Sergeant William Hickey told the court Miss Mulhall, a single woman, was arrested at her home at 11.35am yesterday. Gardaí released her but later rearrested her at 10pm and took her to Mountjoy Garda Station.

Mr Hickey told the court that when the murder charge was put to Miss Mullhall, she replied "Nothing to say".

Judge Connal Gibbons remanded her in custody to appear at the Bridewell District Court next Tuesday.

The Somali man, who was also known as Sheilila Salim, had been living in Ireland since 1990. His headless body was found by a man out walking his dog along the towpath of the canal near the Ballybough Road.

The torso had been wrapped in a black plastic bag and his arms and legs were found nearby. The head has never been recovered.

Det Sgt Hickey told the court Ms Mulhall was charged with the murder on or about March 20th at Richmond Cottages in Dublin's inner city.

Ms Mulhall sat at the back of the court throughout the short hearing. Dressed in blue jeans and a denim jacket and trainers, she remained silent. She is the second woman to be charged in connection with the murder.

Another woman, Linda Mulhall, a mother of four with an address at Kilclare Gardens, Tallaght, Co Dublin, has already been charged with the murder of the 39-year-old Somalian man.

Following appeals to immigrant communities and landlords in the inner city area and a number of appeals through the media, officers eventually discovered the man's identity.
