A CO Galway woman told a Jury she would never forget the "ignorant grin" on the face of the man she alleges raped her in 1995.

The mother of six described at the Central Criminal Court how the man, from Co Roscommon, ordered his young son to leave the room and lock the door.

The defendant threatened to kill her when she begged and pleaded with him not to rape her, she said.

In reply to Mr Denis Vaughan Buckley SC (with Mr Desmond Dockery), defending, the woman denied she had initiated and consented to the sexual intercourse.

The 51-year-old father has pleaded not guilty to raping and sexually assaulting the 40-year-old woman at his home on July 30th, 1995.

Opening the case, Mr Michael Durack SC (with Mr Pat O'Connell), prosecuting, said the accused man initially told gardai no sexual intercourse had taken place and he was charged with rape in January, 1996.

A month later he returned to gardai with his solicitor. They handed in a prepared statement in which he claimed the woman had instigated sex.

The alleged victim told Mr Durack that she and her husband had gone to a pub at about 12.45 p.m. on the hot Sunday afternoon.

At about 4 p.m. her husband refused to give her a lift to a friend's house in Co Roscommon. The defendant was in the pub with his son. She knew the accused man to talk to and he agreed to give her a lift.

On the way, he stopped at his own home to make sandwiches and she felt uncomfortable while sitting in the dining room. She went out to the garden and talked to his son while the defendant was int the kitchen.

She said the defendant brought her back into the dining room and she had the boy by the hand. The defendant told his son to get out of the room and to lock the door. She heard the door "click" but could not bay if the boy locked it.

The defendant had the "ignorant grin" on his face and proceeded to put his hands under her dress despite her protests, she claimed.

The woman told a jury that she bit his lip when he forced her onto the ground and tried to kiss her.

He responded by saying it was the worst thing she could have done. She continued begging and pleading with him and he said: "I'll kill you if I have to." He then ripped off her panties and raped her, the woman said.

The defendant then went into the kitchen and as she lay on the ground she could see both his and his son's feet. The defendant still had the smile on his face and she would never forget it.

In cross-examination, Mr Buckley suggested she had asked the defendant to park his car behind his shed so no one would see it and later initiated sex in the house. The woman replied: "I never suggested anything of the kind. 1 don't go with men. I am married with teenage sons. I had no intentions like that."

She also denied having rowed with her husband or that he had suggested the accused was "too friendly" with her. She did not agree that she had followed the defendant out of the pub and stood in front of his car to get the lift.

She denied telling the defendant that her husband "defied me to go with you, f... him".

The trial before Mr Justice Flood and the jury continues.
